Autumn Harvest Blog Hop: Need Help With Some Fall Cleaning
I’m taking part in the Autumn Harvest Blog Hop!
For more information on the hop, including the other authors participating, click here.
Autumn is a time of change, transition for me. The house generally gets a little extra cleaning, I change the decor to my autumn theme (lots of yellow and orange), and I begin to think about winter and the holidays.
I have to admit that I’m not really a compulsive housekeeper. In fact, it’s only the fact that I like things organized and I don’t like clutter that keeps my home from being a total disaster. But there is something about fall — whether it’s the coming holidays, the change in temperature, or just the fact that I’m indoors more–that inspires me to a bit of extra effort.
My self-published, contemporary paranormal romance needs some fall cleaning and change as well. It isn’t selling. I’d attribute that to my just being a bad or unknown writer, but my other books sell decently well. Not hugely, but reasonably well. MAGIC, MURDER AND MICROCIRCUITS isn’t selling at all. It was a finalist in the Oklahoma RWA’s International Digital Awards recently, so it’s not like it’s a bad book.
I suspect it’s that the combination of title and cover just aren’t telling the right story about the book. Michael Morgan is a kind of grown-up, American Harry Potter, with a Ph.D. in Physics, a chip on his shoulder, and a former lover, also a wizard herself, who’s been sent to convince him to destroy his latest invention.
Here’s the current cover and blurb for the story.
A powerful wizard with a physics degree and a checkered past invents a shield to ensure he’ll never again be tortured almost to death.
The wizarding powers-that-be fear the repercussions of such a device and send his former girlfriend, an accomplished wizard herself, to retrieve the device or destroy it.
When the shield is stolen by the magical mafia, Ilene McConnell and Michael Morgan have to set aside their differences and work together to recover it. Michael claims he needs the device as insurance against the kind of injury and injustice he suffered once before. Ilene maintains its potential to upset the delicate balance of power makes it too dangerous and that it needs to be destroyed. But none of that will matter if they can’t prevent a powerful rogue wizard from using the shield for his own purposes.
Here are a couple of ideas for new covers and titles. Please help me by letting me know which cover/title you think best conveys the story. Or if you have a better idea, I’m open to that, too.
The Wizard’s Shield:
The Colors of Magic:
I’ll hold a drawing for those commenting with their votes and ideas. The winner gets paperback copies of A Gift for Murder and Shadow of a Doubt, along with some bonus extras.

I like the title “The Wizard’s Shield” but not the proposed cover. Maybe keep that pendant then add the guy/girl or both in an action pose like they’re facing imminent danger.

Thank you for the give away,
As for the cover, it just doesn’t tell me much. The shield and the man aren’t well connected. Also, I get no hint of the tension between your MC and his former lover. I get no impression of romance at all, unlike your description of the book.

I adore autumn because of the amazing colors, bundling up in sweaters, Halloween and my birthday! Autumn also means cuddling up with a good book and a cup of cocoa!

Love the cooler weather.

I don’t care as much for a lot of color on the color as it makes it look less serious…more like a sweet, contemporary story instead of about magic. Of the two, I like the second cover better (I know they are different stories).

Magic of color seems more eye catching … as well it seems to fit better, to personally…

I like The Wizards Shield cover!
Thanks for the giveaway! I love discovering new to me authors and books! <3

The story sounds really interesting, but the cover is really generic — very “sweet romance”. I read a lot of UF, fantasy and PNR and would think more “Iron Druid” series by Kevin Hearne covers than the ones shown. They just don’t grab my attention enough as a reader of specific genres.
Best of luck and thanks for the amazing giveaway!

The iron Druid covers ace gorgeous!
The Wizard’s Shield is much better. Make the house much smaller. Photoshop it to a monochrome. Adjust the colors to complement each other more (use a color scheme). Make the couple much larger, let them engage with the reader more. Perhaps a more dramatic photo? Use a different font for the title, or some quality hand lettering. Make the background a dark, rich color, tie the elements together through composition, color, and good typography.
Your attention to your covers is admirable.. Good luck!

I’m sorry to hear about your book. The blurb is pretty good. 🙂
I buy many books just looking at the cover, I wouldn’t buy this one with any of those covers, but I prefer “The Colors of Magic”. It’s a really good title and if it could get more color in it, maybe the guys shirt or really another guy. 🙂
Thanks for the giveaway,

I love autumn with all the brilliant colors: oranges, yellows and reds of leaves. I love crisp, cool mornings where the sky is so blue it looks endless and the air is so fresh in your lungs. I love snuggling up in a warm throw on a cold autumn day with a good book. Of course, I love snuggling up with a good book about anytime of the year. I love Thanksgiving because it is a time to remember all the many blessings in my life and express thanks. I love baking spicy pumpkin pies with dollops of cream.
I like stories of the unexpected. I also love the steamy passion but I hate mentioning favorite authors because the list is long. I appreciate the many styles authors use to weave stories of mystery, love, intrigue, preternatural and inspiration. I love reading because I can go anywhere, any time in my mind and imagine indescribable things.
Thank you for this contest and the opportunity to be introduced to new authors.

I think if I had to choose, The Color of Magic would be my choice for the cover, but I think I like The Wizard’s Shield for a title better than the other two. Good luck with your decision. Thanks for the giveaway.

I like The Wizards Shield!
I love the Fall because of the football games and tailgating! And of course having a campfire with roasted hotdogs! Thanks for the chance to win a great giveaway!

My vote would be for the image on the Wizard’s shield option but with the Colors title (possibly removing the shield/microchip image)
Thanks for participating in the hop 🙂 I love the cooler weather of Autumn

First, i’d like to say I’m sorry about your Mom, and I know that this holiday will be rough. Second, I honestly don’t care for either of your covers, The top one reminds me of a modern Gone with the Wind. The second reminds me of UFO science book. I do like the shield thing on the top, and think if you made it larger and swirled more of those colors with the couple being smaller it will get more attention.

I like the cover of The Wizard’s Shield, only I would use darker colours instead of the bright ones – purple, yellow-green, cause I think that general “darker atmosphere” would suit it better.
dita(dot)skarste(at)gmail(dot)com
I like the first one 🙂 Thanks! lisarayns at gmail dot com
Thanks for joining in the hop. It was great to be introduced to your work.
My favorite part about autumn is that the cool weather gives me the perfect excuse to keep my oven full of yummy deliciousness that I really can’t do during two of the three other seasons. I love the feeling of being able to have yummy stuff baking while I nestle in with a good read.

Not crazy about any of the covers. Too much going on.
Thanks for the chance to win!

I like the cover of The Wizard’s Shield. I agree with Dita, it needs to be just a bit darker because that’s the feel of the blurb. Thanks for the chance to win!
