My daughters and I did it one year—got up well before the crack of dawn, gulped some quick cups of coffee so we could see straight, got in the car, and headed out to a local shopping center, still in the dark.

We had a list of stops and items we wanted to get, culled from the flyers in the paper the previous day. There were some great deals on the list and we were on a mission.

It fizzled quickly.

The stores opened at the crack of dawn, but we weren’t the first ones there. And in the case of many of the good deals available, quantities were limited. They were gone by the time we got there.

And then there were the “deals” that didn’t stand up to closer examination. Items that looked like a great buy until you realized they were flimsy, poorly made, or an off-brand so off you couldn’t find it on any map.

We managed to get a few of the items on our list, but they weren’t the top ones. In fact they were the most marginal ones, the ones that could’ve waited for the next trip to the bargain mart, but were worth picking up while we were there.

We went home, dumped our stuff and headed for bed for naps. And later, when we could think rationally, we swore never again.

A promise to myself I’ve kept ever since.

  7. I prefer shopping online (I’m a international reader ^_^) we do have our own version of the Black Friday only it lasts three days. But I don’t like the pushing and grabbing.

  11. I like Black Friday shopping, but only because it’s fun to watch. I never get there in time for the real bargains, but it’s always fun having lunch out with my girls.

  16. I love the holiday season, but not Black Friday shopping. Like you, I did it once and never again. The retailers may make money, but I think they fool the shoppers. They have very limited quantities of the door buster deals. It’s a way to lure you in. I would rather take my time shopping and make it a fu day rather than a stressful one. I hope everyone’s holiday season is filled with less stress.

  37. This is the BEST way to spend Black Friday. Sitting at home, hopping with old friends and making new ones. I can’t handle the crowds anymore so I only do Black Friday shopping online if I do any. I tend to pick up gifts throughout the year so come November I’m finished. That way I can spread out the purchasing and not spend a fortune at the time of the year when my job is at its slowest and my paycheck is at its lowest.   44. I went last year (the first time in 38 years) full force and hated it. I hated being up that early, the crowds, and the traffic. I did go this year for some pillows at eight last night. It was super crowded and I cannot believe how rude people are! After sleeping on them last night though I think it was worth it.

  77. My neighbor goes completely bonkers for the black friday ads. She has scored several of the electronics. However, every tv, computer, etc that she’s bought that way has broken within a year maybe two at most. So not really a deal after all.
